Gilad Shalit

Gilad Shalit is a French-Israeli soldier who has been held captive for 1844 days by Hamas. He was captured on June 25, 2006, in a cross-border raid near the Kerem Shalom crossing, and has been held as a hostage at an unknown location in the Gaza Strip since then.

The last time he was confirmed alive was two years ago when he was photographed with a current newspaper.

His parents hold a vigil outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s house. We went and spent time with the people there this afternoon chatting to them about whether they still held out hope he was alive. They all overwhelmingly think that he is, believing he is worth more alive than dead.

Thousands of people from around the world have come to this spot and left yellow ribbons with messages and prayers to Gilad for his safe return.

I had trouble writing mine… What do you write to someone who in your own mind is already dead…?

“Be well…” is all I could come up with…
