Australia Day

Happy Australia Day everyone!

Wow. I can’t remember the last time I had an Australia Day away from home. Probably in the early 2000s. January is just not a time I ever travel. The weather is wonderful in Australia in January, Melbourne is abuzz with the Australian Open tennis etc so why go anywhere?

My Australia Day was suitably more low key than usual here in Costa Rica. For starters its not a public holiday (funny that!) and as far as I’m aware I’m the only Aussie around these parts.

So instead of the usual beer, Bundy and barbecue festivities, I spent the day painting. It was a nice time to reflect on the great things about my homeland. There has been a lot debate in recent times about a racist undertone in Australia but I for one love our diverse culture. Who doesn’t want the Smiths, the Wilsons, the Santerellis, the De Costis, the Wongs and the Jagamarras as neighbours? It’s what makes living in Australia so damn great!

I did my bit to be patriotic this afternoon by introducing Luis, Alonso and Yislein to cheese and Vegemite on a Salada biscuit. How good are Saladas btw? I haven’t had one for a million years.

Anyway happy Australia Day one and all!

I pinched this phone off my friend Liz’s Facebook. She was enjoying her Australia Day at the cricket. Lucky thing 🙂
