Time is money

You can see why Hollywood blockbusters quickly spiral out of control when it comes to budgets. A 10 minute delay here and there and pretty soon you are a month behind in filming. We don’t have such a luxury. This shoot needs to be done and dusted in four days because of everybody’s schedules. Well, except me of course. I could quite happily do this for the rest of the month.

We got off to a slower start than we were hoping yesterday which means there was a little catch up to be done tonight. Unfortunately it didn’t go according to plan. We were supposed to be all set up and ready to shoot by 9pm but we didn’t end up starting until well after 10.30pm because Martin the sounds guy got delayed. He is still studying in Lillehammer and had to make the seven hour return journey there after very little sleep yesterday for some compulsory lecture he had to attend. Of course then when he got back he had to rest a little and eat. Maida seemed to take it all in her stride but if that was me, I would have been like: “Bugga eating, time is money, lets get this show on the road!”

As it turned out he ended up being too tired to shoot and so set up the equipment for Truls and Maida to monitor while he went off to bed.

It probably wasn’t such a bad thing in the end because all of tonight’s filming took place inside a car. Kai Kenneth and Amelia took their positions in the front seats of the car while Maida, Hilde and Truls squashed themselves in the boot of the station wagon. Luckily all three are relatively short. Had Martin been in there too it would have been a really tight squeeze.

I felt a bit helpless tonight because there was nothing really I could do besides be on hand in case something went wrong. We work up “this morning” at about 3.30pm and were on set by 6pm. I spent the first couple of hours climbing up embankments with a ladder and then climbing up onto tree limbs to attach lights for a street scene but after that, my work was done.

So I spent the rest of the night watching fireflies being eaten by bats next to a lake, which would have been quite spectacular had it not been so cold. The water was so still you could see the perfect reflection of the lights we had rigged up.
